Banfi’s 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva is a Sangiovese-led Tuscan red with ripe plum, blackberry and licorice. It is full-bodied but approachable, with soft tannins supporting the fruit rather than dominating it. The finish is long and savory, extending its ripe fruit without losing a clear sense of balance.

The producer
Banfi was founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, in partnership with winemaker Ezio Rivella in Montalcino. The family joined Tuscan tradition to technical research, beginning vineyard zoning in 1980 and Sangiovese clonal selection in 1982, then restoring the historic Poggio alle Mura castle.
What critics say
Wine Enthusiast’s Danielle Callegari found the 2021 Riserva earthy and savory, with herbs and topsoil balanced by wild strawberry. Cherry, citrus and salinity added lift on the palate, while chalky, chewy tannins supplied structure; she awarded 90 points.
