Vietti’s 2020 Tre Vigne gives Barbera’s naturally bright character a generous, dark-fruited expression. Black cherry and plum lead into violet and a little savory spice. The palate is juicy and rounded, with freshness at the finish keeping this Asti red lively enough for tomato-rich dishes.

The producer

Carlo Vietti founded the cellar in Castiglione Falletto in the late nineteenth century; later generations helped revive varietal Roero Arneis and developed single-vineyard Barolos. Its Barbera d’Asti offers another Piedmontese perspective, centered on Barbera’s fruit and freshness rather than Nebbiolo’s firmer tannic structure.

What critics say

Wine Enthusiast’s Jeff Porter scored Vietti’s 2020 Tre Vigne Barbera d’Asti 93 points. He found black cherry, roasted plum, candied violet and sweet spice, with a juicy blackberry palate, dried lavender, savory spice and a bright, fresh finish.

Pairing

Recommended with: Arancini; Linguine Bolognese; or Chicken Vesuvio.
