Pio Cesare’s classic Barolo combines several estate vineyards rather than a single cru. The 2014 offers plum and raspberry with rose and tea-like detail. Dense tannins carry a fine inner texture, giving a full, persistent impression while retaining the fragrant, savory dimension expected from Nebbiolo.

The producer

Pio Cesare has produced its classic Barolo since 1881. The wine brings together Nebbiolo from several communes, rather than a single cru, reflecting the family’s view that blending different vineyard characters is central to the identity of traditional Barolo.

Falstaff’s Othmar Kiem and Simon Staffler awarded the 2014 Barolo 94 points. They noted tea, rose petal, licorice, plum and raspberry, followed by vivid fruit, dense tannins, fine inner texture and a long, enveloping finish.
