Altero is Poggio Antico’s distinct Brunello bottling from its high Montalcino estate. The 2016 combines cherry and rose with a bright orange-zest accent. Full-bodied yet linear, it relies on vibrant acidity and taut tannins for shape, finishing with a dry, savory impression rather than plush sweetness.

The producer
Founded in 1976 on Montalcino’s southwestern slopes, Poggio Antico farms roughly 35 vineyard hectares near 550 meters, among the denomination’s highest sites. Detailed soil work divides the property into six macro units and fifteen soil units, harvested and vinified separately. Altero, first made in 1983, offers the estate’s contemporary Brunello interpretation.
What critics say
Kerin O’Keefe awarded 95 points in Wine Enthusiast, highlighting rose, citrus, wild herb and new leather before cherry, orange zest, licorice and graphite. She described a linear, full-bodied wine with taut tannins, vibrant acidity and youthful austerity.
