Vietti’s Castiglione is a blend of Barolo sites rather than a single-vineyard bottling. The 2012 combines dark cherry and orange peel with a faint bitter-herbal note. Its mouth-filling tannins give the wine a substantial, dry finish; aromatic detail matters here as much as fruit weight.

The producer
Carlo Vietti founded the estate in Castiglione Falletto in the late nineteenth century, where the winery still stands. Its classic Barolo draws from small vineyards across several communes; individual sites are vinified separately, then assembled to express the broader Barolo area.
What critics say
Falstaff’s Othmar Kiem awarded the 2012 Castiglione 91 points. He noted ripe dark cherry, sealing wax, cinchona bark and orange peel, followed by mouth-filling, gripping tannins and a finish that remained somewhat rugged.
